Six Lines for Central Park
When Nickel installed “Six Lines for Central Park” in 1980, he was challenged by a local bird-watching group, which wanted no disturbances to its favorite part of the park. After he produced his permit and explained that the piece was temporary, the group allowed him to proceed. When Nickel was dismantling the piece at the end of the show, a second group objected to the removal of what they had thought was a permanent work in their park. The resident ducks took to the work immediately.
