Inverted Pyramid Piece
1973 | Brentwood, Missouri
Fir 4x4’s | H: 36/91 W: 70/178 D: 70/178 (in/cm)

A pyramid by definition, has a square base. Rather than displaying an enclosing pyramid, this piece exposes the interior by placing it on its point. A closed form becomes an open form merely by orientation. The receding verticals call attention to the center and the four corners and complete the structure. Without the verticals, the pyramid is a stacking of receding squares, a very unstable and vulnerable structure. The verticals lock in the walls by resisting the transfer of horizontal force.
