Perishable
1974 | Brentwood, Missouri
Oak and Welded Steel | H: 10/25 W: 115/292 D: 4/10 (in/cm)

Nickel explored three directions in this piece: left-to-right eye movement in reading the word, frontal zooming in and out with the grid, and right-to-left/left-to-right in perception of grain in the wood plank. The grid was made from welded steel rods with an angle iron surround. The word, “Perishable,” was suggested by a rubber stamp acquired from the St. Louis Post Dispatch copy room and was intended as a reference to the ephemeral quality of visual perception.
