See Through
20 October 1971 | St. Louis, Missouri
Gelatin Silver Print | H: 14/36 W: 11/28 (in/cm)

This simple photograph of a slatted fence was perhaps the single most influential image on Nickel’s work in St. Louis. The tension between an obscured background and precise, dominant foreground — the notion of seeing deeply through multiple layers — certainly informed his early painting and led to his series of large tape paintings in the mid-1970s.
