Aluminum Piece
10 October 1982 | New York City
Cast Aluminum | H: 98/249 W: 50/127 D: 7/18 (in/cm)

Although it is metal, the Aluminum Piece belongs in the family of plywood “Circle Pieces.” It began with a piece of Formica countertop scrap found on the street. After locating the eccentric shape’s center of gravity, Nickel cut a succession of one-inch arcs, working out from that center. He rotated each arc two inches in a stepwise fashion. The resultant form was then sand cast at a New Jersey foundry specializing in aircraft engine parts. The finished work evokes continental drift, as if North and South America were chasing each other.
